Innovation is a test loop

Glowforge innovation, from uncertain material to documented method

This roadmap treats each improvement as a claim to verify: prepare, expose, inspect, record, and only then scale.

Follow the loop
The six-gate build loop

A horizontal path with a deliberate stop at every unknown

Gate 01

Name

Capture composition, coating, thickness, supplier lot, and the reason the material is considered laser-compatible.

Gate 02

Prepare

Check file revision, focus, optics, workholding, bed clearance, ventilation route, and fire controls.

Gate 03

Expose

Run a small parameter matrix under observation; settings are candidates, not transferable guarantees.

Gate 04

Inspect

Measure fit and kerf, then examine edge condition, residue, color, deformation, and small-feature survival.

Gate 05

Record

Link observations to the machine state, file, material lot, environment, and operator preparation.

Gate 06

Release

Approve the limited method, state its boundaries, and require revalidation when a critical input changes.

1 file revision

Geometry traceability

Approved vectors remain tied to the sample result. A changed path, slot, or raster region creates a new validation point rather than silently inheriting an earlier record.

Verify: dimensions, path order, detached features
3 observation families

Cut, surface, environment

Completion alone is insufficient. Inspect edge or mark quality, part fit, smoke behavior, residue, and the stability of the exhaust arrangement during the coupon.

Verify: quality, repeatability, safe operating context
0 universal settings

Transfer limits disclosed

Material brand, thickness, moisture, coating, optics, focus, and airflow can shift results. Published examples and prior settings remain hypotheses until the current material is tested.

Verify: representative stock and current machine state
The surrounding system

Innovation depends on evidence from more than the machine

M

Material suppliers

Composition documents, coating information, lot identity, and sample availability support a defensible test.

V

Ventilation specialists

Site airflow, discharge, filtration, and local exposure requirements need project-specific review.

D

Design operators

File revision control and geometry notes turn a successful sample into a method another person can follow.

Q

Quality owners

Visual and dimensional acceptance criteria decide whether a faster, darker, or cleaner path is actually preferred.
